Noah’s Cheese is a boutique cheesery situated on the farm Node, ten kilometres from the popular tourist town Clarens in the Eastern Free State.
The business started from humble beginnings in 2012 when the founder, Marietjie Crowther, received a cow from her father as a birthday present. With twenty liters of milk a day, she started making mozzarella cheese and progressed into making unique other pasta filata (“stretched curd”) cheeses. She quickly realised that a lucrative market existed and invested in infrastructure to process more milk.
In 2015 two of her cheeses won second and third prize at the South African National Dairy Championship in the Pasta Filata category and the business quickly grew to capacity.
In September 2017 Noah’s Cheese was invited by Slow Food International to participate in Cheese 2017, the world’s biggest cheese festival, Bra Italy. Noah’s Cheese became a member of the Slow Food Presidium. The Slow Food Presidia consist of small food producers committed to providing good, clean and fair food that is beneficial to humans and the planet. Noah’s Cheese proudly makes only raw milk cheese from Jearsey cows in the time honoured tradition.
The company completed a new cheesery with an increased capacity on the farm during February 2018, after an investment by the Industrial Development Corporation.
Noah’s Cheese is well known for its marinated string cheeses, smoked mozzarella, salad cheese and a range of other products.
Slow Food is a global, grassroots organization, founded in 1989 to prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions, counteract the rise of fast life and combat people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the world around us.
Slow Food is a global movement originated in Italy, envisions a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is good for them, good for those who grow it and good for the planet.
Our approach is based on a concept of food that is defined by three interconnected principles: good, clean and fair.
The Slow Food Presidia sustain quality production at risk of extinction, protect unique regions and ecosystems, recover traditional processing methods, safeguard native breeds and local plant varieties.
Noah’s Cheese, one of a few raw milk cheese producers in South Africa, has been a member of the Slow Food Presidia since September 2017.
The IDC (Industrial Development Corporation) made a video, which will tell you a lot about us.
String Cheese is a mozzarella based cheese, that is pulled into thin strings and used as snack or in salads. It a fun cheese! This one is marinated in basil pesto. We also have Chilli and Herb String Cheese and Smoked Sting Cheese that was smoked with apple wood.
We at Noah’s Cheese are very grateful to have many great reviews. After all, without happy customers we will not be able to offer great cheese!
Visited 2 times in 1 week……
My husband and I did some sightseeing around Clarens and decided to see what’s happening at Noah’s Cheese!
What a lovely surprise, we were so impress that we took our Dutch friends 2 days later and they bought almost all the stock available….that is saying a lot about the quality of their cheeses…..
Lovely peaceful cheese farm
Noah’s cheese was a lovely drive, about 5kms on a dirt road, but well worth it. A beautiful position right under a mountain. Lovely quaint little touches in the seating area and bathrooms, loved the pebble 0’s and X’s on the table. We just shared a platter for one which was an adequate size for two of you for a snack. Cheese was delicious and especially loved the stringy cheese.
The variety and taste is excellent
Noah’s Cheese is a rustic, very personal experience of cheese tasting. The variety and taste is excellent. The setting at the foot of the mountain is gorgeous. The hosts are friendly and knowledgeable. Most definitely worth a visit.
